Assessing Transition Cow Management and Performance
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction In order to achieve high reproductive efficiency and high milk production, herds must properly manage the entire non‐lactating period and early lactation. We refer to this time period as The Vital 90TM Days and it begins approximately 60 days before calving and continues through the first 30 days of lactation. During this time, dairy cows are exposed to a series of biological and physiological transitions that are usually accompanied by large changes in feed intake, dramatic shifts in hormonal profiles, and major fluxes in hepatic demands and function. The resulting negative energy and negative protein balance as well as immune suppression often leads to a multitude of metabolic and infectious problems.

Dietary Energy Density for the Close-Up Dry Cow – Postpartum Performance
The transition period for dairy cows is generally defined as the time period from three weeks prior to parturition through three weeks after parturition. It is now recognized that defining and meeting the nutritional requirements of the transition dairy cow can greatly impact animal health, production in the ensuing lactation, overall longevity, and animal well-being (NRC, 2001). Nutrition and ...

Thirty two multiparous Holstein cows were used in a randomized block design to investigate the effects of feeding diets included two different source of nonfiber carbohydrate during the transition period on dry matter intake (DMI), lactational performance, blood metabolites and parturitional characteristics. Cows received total mixed rations containing either macaroni wastes(MW) or steam-flaked...
متن کاملMetabolic and immunological changes in transition dairy cows: A review
Smooth transition from pregnancy to lactation is important for high productive and reproductive performance during later postpartum period in dairy animals. On the other hand, the poor transition often leads to huge economic loss to dairy farmers due to compromised production and reproduction. Therefore, understanding the causes and consequence of metabolic changes during the transition period ...
متن کاملThe transition period for a dairy cow is from two to three weeks prepartum until two to three weeks postpartum
The transition period for a dairy cow is from 3 to 2 wk prepartum until 2 to 3 wk postpartum. The term transition is to underscore the important physiological, metabolic, and nutritional changes occurring in this time frame. It constitutes a turning point in the productive cycle of the cow from one lactation to the next. The manner in which these changes occur and how they are managed are of gr...

Background Drivers of change in dairy herd health management include the significant increase in herd/farm size, quota removal (within Europe) and the increase in technologies to aid in dairy cow reproductive management. Main body There are a number of key areas for improving fertility management these include: i) handling of substantial volumes of data, ii) genetic selection (including impro...
